I broke my phone… I got the new Samsung Z FLip 4 as a gift at Christmas and I’ve been so careful but one drop and it wouldn’t open all the way anymore. I went down to the Samsung experience store in King’s Cross to see if they could repair same day and luckily enough they had all the parts. Whilst getting that looked at, we explored the Coal Drops Yard, it’s a quirky bit of King’s Cross with loads to do but since we were in the area I wanted to head down to Roti King since it’s been on my list to try for a while now.
Roti King is just down the road from Euston, it’s in the basement of a residential block, serving authentic Malaysian and Singaporean street food. We just had a mini stop over in Singapore last month on the way to Thailand but didn’t get to explore the food as much as we wanted to so I was really excited to try the Laksa especially because the only Laksa I got was on the flight itself!

The restaurant is small and only can seat about 25-30 people at one time which explains the line all the way out the door and down the road but looking at the price and portion sizes I’m not surprised this place is so popular. We waited about half an hour before we were seated but I really do think it was worth the wait. At Roti King you are only allowed to order once, you have to order everything you want all at once so we decided on a dish each then a Roti and side to share. We went with the Mutton Roti Canai, it came with two warm flakey roti and a small bowl of Mutton curry which was so rich and hearty I could have probably had just that myself and been full. We also had a side of Fried Chicken with Sambal sauce and these chunks of chicken were no joke. They were thick and juicy which just the right amount of crisp, maybe it’s my own preference but I wasn’t a huge fan of the Sambal with the chicken, I think I’m too used to eating it with rice?

For our mains, my boyfriend opted for the Nasi Goreng and I got my Laksa! Both meals had a really healthy amount of meat and a nice bit of heat. I would say though, the Nasi Goreng was a bit small in comparison to the other dishes, it felt more like a side than the side itself. The Laksa really hit the spot on hearty, it was a bit oily which did make it feel even heavier but that’s what a Laksa is so I can’t really complain.
Roti King was definitely worth the wait, I think we will always have an issue with over ordering but it’s hard not to when the food is such good value for money. I’d love to try their sweet Rotis next time, or even a stuffed Roti!
